Past perfect
A: Dấu hiệu nhận biết

When I got up this morning, my father had already left.

B: Cấu trúc 
When we arrived, the film had started
It had snowed in the night, so the bus didn't arrive 
had + 1 past participle (PII)
C: Cách dùng quá khứ hoàn thành (past past)
Diễn tả hành động xảy ra trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ
I lost so much weight because I had begun exercising.
He stayed up all night because he had received a lot of homework.
Rachel hadn't lost hope, and in the end she found her baby.
I had met him before you introduced us.
Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trước một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
I had already fallen asleep before ten o'clock.
They had established their business before 2002.
We had gotten married before 1985.
Kate had never played the drums until last night.
Diễn tả một hành động bắt đầu trong quá khứ và kéo dài đến một thời điểm khác trong quá khứ. (Note: Thường chỉ dùng với trạng thái)
Molly had wanted a guitar, but she received a book.
They had lived in Italy for twelve years before they moved to England.
I had owned this place for two years before I sold it.
A: Chia động từ trong ngoặc ở quá khứ hoàn thành (Past perfect)

C: Chia động từ ở quá khứ hoàn thành hoặc quá khứ đơn
1. When the police (arrive), the car (go).
